Recollections of John McWilliams

by John McWilliams

In this autobiography John McWilliams reports that he left Griggsville, Illinois at the tender age of seventeen.  He arrived in Shasta City, CA in October, 1849 and tried his hand at mining in Weaver Creek, Olney Creek and the mines of southern Oregon.

Enjoying only modest success as a miner, a letter from home persuaded him to return to Griggsville in January 1853.  Many families of the area are mentioned.

His “Recollections…” also describes his acquaintance with General Joe Hooker, and his involvement in the Battle of Peach Tree Creek and Sherman's March to the Sea.
