Theordore Roosevelt, as a young man, describes life in and around his Dakota Ranch

Ranch Life and The Hunting Trail

Theodore Roosevelt published Ranch Life and The Hunting Trail in 1888 when he was just 30 years old.  He had already had a brief career in New York politics and was an accomplished writer.

While at his ranch in the Dakota Territory, Roosevelt met men who worked at many occupations that no longer exist:  mountain men, buffalo hunters and even horse thieves.  He describes these characters, as well as standoffs with the indians, cattle roundups, etc.  Remington's illustrations of these activities are invaluable.
